To have style – you have to know who you are // Flirty Florals c/o Lady Mayra | OOTD

Untitled Hello Peaches! I recently wore this pretty floral fifties dress c/o Lady Mayra on literally one of the hottest days of summer so far…. Then the next day it poured it down. Welcome to England right.

The sweetheart neckline is so flattering, really feminine and the full circle skirt just makes you want to twirl wherever you go. I sourced this pale blue petticoat for a bargain of £5 from a selling group on Facebook and paired this with baby blue patent geek shoes. If worn without a petticoat, this is your perfect summer dress – lightweight and floaty. Lady Mayra has a huge range of fifties shape dresses designed to fit and flaunt your curves.

What I love about the fifties shape is that it is just so comfortable and wearable. I often flit between the 50s and 60s but would say my preferred style is late 50s to early 60s. For me, the fifties are so feminine and idyllic – sometimes I have days where I just want to dress girly. The sixties bring out the experimentation side of me. The colours, shapes and crazy patterns of the sixties just make me get up and tell the world to “run at me” in a morning. I would wear this dress to perform in as equally as with a pair of white pumps to run errands in. Selling vintage online for the last two years now has opened my eyes to a million different styles, given me options to explore within my own wardrobe and eras to ponder over. Now this is probably not the “correct” way to appreciate the eras of yesteryear – but I am who I am and who I am needs no excuses.

I recently watched a documentary on Netflix about Iris Apfel – what a woman! Iris is 95 – and we share the same birthday (this inspiration was meant to be) – watching her documentary had me in awe. To say she is in the golden years of her life, she has given so much to fashion and encouraged so many people to explore their own style. In her own words “ I see myself as the worlds oldest living teenager, because I have such a good time, and I try to get as much as a kick out of things as possible” – what a mantra to live by!

Her zest for life and her self-confidence is only to be admired and respected. “ I do not dress to be stared at – I dress for myself” – there are just so many of her quotes that ring true for me and so many pearls of wisdom. After witnessing most of the changes in fashion that are so regularly repeated on the catwalk today, Iris states that there is no “how to” road map to style – it’s about self-expression and above all – attitude. I think someone who has lived through drawing seams for stockings onto the back of your legs to flared trousers bigger than life – when they tell you something like this, you cannot help but listen.

As Iris says “ When you don’t dress like everyone else, you don’t have to think like everyone else”
